Standard alcove configurations
Alcoves in Victorian and Edwardian terraces are usually 60–100 cm wide and 55–70 cm deep — too shallow for full-depth hanging, but ideal for double hanging shirts, drawers and shelves. We typically build full-height wardrobes both sides, optionally with bookcases or open shelves above a fireplace mantel between them.
- Full-height shaker wardrobes both sides of the chimney breast
- Wardrobe below, open shelves above — for living room alcoves
- Asymmetric layout where the alcoves are different widths
Matching the period
Shaker doors with two or three recessed panels suit period homes best. We can match panel proportions to the existing picture rail, dado rail or window panelling so the new joinery looks like it has always been there.
Frequently asked questions
- Are alcove wardrobes cheaper than full-wall fitted?
- Per metre they're similar, but the total bill is usually lower because there's less linear metres of joinery.
- Can you build around an active fireplace?
- Yes, with adequate clearance to the hearth and heat-resistant carcass detailing. We assess this at survey.
