Under-Stairs Storage Ideas — 8 Bespoke Layouts For London Homes

The most wasted square metre in most London homes — and eight ways to reclaim it.

Most under-stairs spaces are a cluttered void with a single door. Below are eight bespoke layouts we've installed across London — each starting from a laser survey of the actual stringer and tread geometry.

1. Pull-out drawer bank under each tread

Three to five full-extension drawers, one under each tread, for shoes, scarves and the bag-by-the-door clutter.

2. Hidden full-height cupboard

A single tall door behind the deepest part of the stair, ideal for vacuum, ironing board, coats and the broom.

3. Angled shoe wall following the stringer

Open shelves following the underside of the stair, with a low bench at the front for putting shoes on.

4. Home office nook

A compact desk and shelf set under the tallest part of the stair, with integrated task lighting and cable management.

5. Wine cellar with rack and chiller

Custom oak racks following the stair angle, with a discreet under-counter chiller. Popular in dining-room-adjacent staircases.

6. Downstairs WC

Joinery integrated into a downstairs cloakroom — full-height vanity, mirror and storage in the awkward sloped portion.

7. Coat and dog kit cupboard

Hooks, a bench, boot tray and a slot for the dog lead. Surprisingly transformative in family homes.

8. Pet bed nook

Open recess at the lowest end of the stair with a built-in cushion. Loved by clients with cocker spaniels.
